LIYANA Women's Museum 2.jpg

Travel Image ~ Women's Museum

Ha Noi, Vietnam

The constant blowing of horns can initially be a disturbing feature of Ha Noi but the chaos and noise emanating from the streets is infectious.  Within the chaotic and winding streets, the Vietnamese have created museums to commemorate the history of their nation.  The Women’s Museum in Ha Noi is dedicated completely to women’s achievements and contributions to the national identity.  This image, with its reflections, conveys the multiple, and at times fragmented, identities of women.  It reflects our desire to feel whole and return to oneness.

LOLA 05-SEA-3003 - Dragon.jpg

Travel Image ~ Dragon

Kuching, Malaysian Borneo

This dragon can be seen at the Chinese temple in downtown Kuching.  Hours can be spent exploring all the detail in the decorations that adorn the walls of the open air sanctuary.  Chinese temples serve as a refuge from the stream of traffic and constant motion of the city. The people of Kuching come and go, offering prayers and lighting incense. In Chinese mythology the dragon represents the vital potential of falling rain and flowing water.  Life is a process of constant growth and learning to go with the flow creates some ease within the experience.   Dragons have been very present for me recently again.

Bayon, Temples of Angkor, Cambodia

The temples of Angkor in Cambodia rise up out of the jungle.  None is more impressive than Bayon at the center of Angkor Thom.  Bayon was constructed around 1200 A.D. by Jayavarman VII, the most prolific builder of all the Khmer kings. Two hundred and sixteen humungous faces depict Avalokitesvara, the Buddhist god deemed the “Lord who looks down on the World.”.  The survival of these temples and the details within their construction is a testament to the incredible power and artistry of the ancestors of Cambodia.  There is a strength that emanates from these peaceful faces.

Oh, Kolkata.  Her energy enveloped me in darkness, in shadow as a deep invitation for me to play in my shadow.   She also enveloped in the love of the Divine Mother.  The light & the dark are present within each of us.  These were the moments where the different facets of the goddess were revealed to me as facets of myself.  It was the external experience enlivening the internal journey through the Goddess.  I am forever in gratitude to the Kolkata for her lessons of shadow and light.

DANIEL FOOR Bio Final.jpg

DANIEL FOOR SHOWNOTES:

I’m a teacher and practitioner of practical animism who specializes in ancestral and family healing and in helping folks learn to relate well with the rest of the natural world.

My focus on the ancestors sources from the guidance of my teachers in earth-honoring traditions (e.g., European pagan paths, Native American ways, Mongolian shamanism, and West African Ifá/Òrìṣà tradition), from my training as a doctor of psychology and clinical mental health professional, and from two decades of implementing the teachings of ancestor reverence in my own life. Since 2005 I’ve guided hundreds of ancestor trainings, rituals, and talks throughout the United States and helped many others to reconnect with their family ancestors through personal sessions. My book, Ancestral Medicine: Rituals for Personal and Family Healing, will be available in 2017.

Over the past few decades I’ve trained with teachers of Mahayana Buddhism, Islamic Sufism, and diverse indigenous paths, including the remnant and returning traditions of my older English, Irish, and German ancestors. I’m also a student of Yoruba culture and an initiate (ọmọ awo) of Ifá, Ọbàtálá, Ọ̀ṣun, and Egúngún in the lineage of Olúwo Fálolú Adésànyà Awoyadé from Òdè Rẹ́mọ.

My doctoral research in psychology focused on the use of shamanic healing practices by clinical mental health professionals, and I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist. I’ve been blessed to spend time as a student of culture and language in the Czech Republic, Mexico, Ecuador, Egypt, Morocco, and Nigeria.

Training as a therapist, living in other societies, and immersion in different lineages of ritual work all inform my kind and non-dogmatic approach to ancestor and earth reverence. Although I draw inspiration from lineages of established practice, my public offerings aim to be culturally inclusive, and I hold social and ecological justice to be inseparable from spiritual teachings and practice.

The town center of Jodhpur, in the heart of Rajasthan, teems with the hustle of markets around the world.  Spices are measured for sale in one corner with shoes in the next corner.  The traditional designs on these shoes are often hand stitched in local homes.  The young man selling these shoes swore they were stitched by his own mother.  Here, you can walk away wearing a little piece of the India of the maharajas.  These shoes remind me of all the different shoes we wear & the diverse paths we walk each lifetime.
